Toshiba Satellite P105-S9722 Reviewed By Laptop Magazine

toshibasatellitep105s972i.jpgReviewing Toshiba Satellite P105-S9722 Laptop

Magazine gives it 4 out of 5 stars rating and writes, “Priced at less than $2,000, the Toshiba Satellite P105-S9722, with its black-and-silver glossy curves, may not look like a traditional gaming rig, but the machine packs plenty of polygon-pushing muscle. Strong performance, a jumbo-sized hard drive, and tons of connectivity options make the P105-S9722 an all-around winner, save for the rather pedestrian battery life. The large (17-inch) glossy screen delivers 1440 x 900 pixels of resolution. That’s not quite as high as other desktop replacement systems we’ve tested, some of which display 1900 x 1220 pixels. Multimedia mavens will appreciate the Harman Kardon speakers, however, which are loud enough to fill a small room when watching movies, listening to music, or playing games. The size of the display allows plenty of space for a full-sized keyboard and dedicated number pad, which facilitated a pleasurable typing experience. We appreciate that you can launch applications and control the volume from within the touchpad, but it’s a bit small, as are the corresponding buttons. The quick-launch Web browser and media-player buttons are located above the keys, as are the multimedia controls for playing DVDs and CDs (which you can do without booting Windows). The P105-S9722 is more than ready for Windows Vista, thanks to its 2-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 processor, 200GB hard drive, and 2GB of RAM. It turned in an excellent score of 234 on our MobileMark 2005 test, which means you’ll be able to plow through any productivity task. This 17-incher also proved to be a gaming monster, courtesy of the Nvidia GeForce Go 7900GS graphics card (including 256MB of dedicated video memory). The P105-S9722 produced an impressive score of 14,855 on our 3DMark03 test-more than 1,000 points higher than the average desktop replacement. Running F.E.A.R. in autodetect mode, the P105-S9722 produced a silky-smooth 78 frames per second and dipped to a still-respectable 44 frames per second with the settings maxed out.Wireless throughput was a solid 14.9 Mbps at 15 feet from our access point, and 16.9 at 50 feet. Although the battery lasted only two hours and six minutes with Wi-Fi off, we think it’s an acceptable tradeoff for the power of the discrete graphics. Our tested configuration came with InterVideo WinDVD5, Microsoft Office OneNote 2003, Windows Media Player 10, WildTangent Game Console, and Yahoo Music Engine. A fingerprint reader is also included for additional security. Toshiba backs the system with a one-year standard warranty with toll-fee 24/7 tech support. If you’re looking for a reasonably priced notebook with powerful graphics, the Toshiba P105-S9722 is an excellent choice for work and play.”PROS & CONS of the Toshiba Satellite P105-S9722 (4 out of 5 stars rating)• Excellent productivity and gaming performance• Handy multimedia controls• Full array of standard connections• Comfortable keyboard• Good speakers• Not the highest resolution• Short battery lifeRead more reviews of the Toshiba Satellite P105-S9722

Id Looking for a Few Good Developers for DOOM 4

Posted by laptop2reviews on May 10, 2008

Not only did Id Games announce today that it is hard at work on the next installment of the first-person shooter DOOM series, DOOM 4, but the company is looking to hire designers, artists, animators, and programmers to develop the new title.”DOOM is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth,” said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software.  ”It’s critical for id Software to have the best creative minds in-house to develop games that meet the standards synonymous with our titles.”No less than 15 positions were listed on the Id Software job listings page at the time of this news post. Most of the job listings indicate that Id is looking to develop for the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 platforms. Three of the available positions are for Id Mobile and are for developing for the “DS, iPhone, J2ME, BREW, and Symbian” mobile platforms. If Id is still putting its development team together, then it is too early to tell when DOOM 4 will hit the shelves. Considering the length of time games typically take to develop, it will probably be a few years before we see DOOM 4 come to fruition. In light of today’s economy, this could mean good job security for the lucky few who make it onboard at Id.

EeePC 900 review

Posted by laptop2reviews on May 7, 2008

Introduction

Reviews for the new ASUS EEE PC 900 UMPC are coming in thick and fast, but none of them seem to go into the sort of depth that the forum members here at eeeuser.com would like. With that in mind, and with my new 900 sitting on the dining room table waiting to be unboxed, I decided to attempt to answer some of the more technical questions that people have been asking on the forums, and to compare the 900 with the 701 machine I already own.

About this particular EeePC.
This machine is an official UK Eee PC 900 model, supplied by Clove Technology (www.clovetechnology.co.uk), running the Xandros Linux operating system.

UPDATE : A note about the performance measurements.
Since writing this review, I found out that setting the 900 to Power Saving mode has no effect if the machine is connected to the mains supply. To get the BIOS to actually do this means pulling the plug and running it on battery power alone. So when I saw no difference in performance between Performance and Power Saving modes in my review, I was being mislead – it was all effectively in Performance mode, since the machine was plugged into the mains. I’ve since added some more results in real Power Saving mode, and they seem to indicate little or no gains over the 701 (obviously the Performance mode does give a real boost, though).

Unboxing the EeePC 900

Before we get to the nitty gritty, let’s take a very quick look at what is in the package.
